Marco.org - iPhone multitasking and background updating

By naming these features “multitasking”, Apple has set customers’ expectations to include what apps can do in a traditional computer multitasking environment.

It’s going to mislead people into expecting such behavior from apps, but we can’t actually deliver most of it.

A proposal to improve the shortcoming of iOS4's multitasking by the brilliant genius that brought you instapaper.

Frommer's Travel Tools On iTunes

If you're a frequent traveller and have access to the iTunes store consider: Frommer's Travel Tools. This free app contains handy tools such as a tip calculators, unit and currency converters, a packing checklist, and a postcard maker - just to name a few. Have a look at the screenshots, I've uploaded it in order (left to right).

Not bad really.

New Sprint ad shows iPhone using WiMAX... via Overdrive

Sprint's Overdrive creates a WiFi hotspot that allows nearby devices (such as an iPhone) to connect to Clear's 4G WiMAX network. I think that is absolutely cool (and may even save iPhone battery power).

Pair with a non-3G iPad anyone?

Media Prima's iPhone Radio App

Media Prima launched an iPhone app to stream 3 of their radio stations over the air. It's a clear quality stream of 128kbs and it's streamed lived. The 3 stations are; Fly FM (English), Hot FM (Malay), and One FM (Chinese). There are a few quirks here and there but that's probably because the app hasn't gone through an aesthetics process yet - the app feels like it just came out from the developer oven.

My opinions on where it can improve;

  1. The App title isn't very fitting "MPB". Perhaps they planned to add more features to it for the whole group. If not then "MPB Radio" would be more apt. The icon also tags it as Hot FM only.
  2. Fly.FM's volume is significantly lower than the other stations.
  3. The light translucent play/stop button is too light. Needs to be more solid.
  4. This is probably my own opinion: The "Done" button signifies a closure of an app - perhaps that's my impression after using internal Safari (Safari within an app). Maybe the button should read "Back" or "Station Selection" instead.
  5. When launching the app, the splash screen flickers and then goes to the "Station Selection" page that takes a few seconds (too long) to load.
  6. The site needs a "Download from Appstore" button. You know? The gray one that's stamped on iPhone app sites.

Being a big consumer of streaming music, I have to say this is better than AMP's app and there's alot of potential for the MPB app to grow. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Maxis Movie Booking iPhone App

So Maxis has released a pretty neat app for Malaysian movie goers and it's available on the iTunes app store. The app will allow you to check showtimes, movie info, trailers, and even allow you to make a booking - only for TGV cinamas for now. Booking will open your safari browser, so it's not part of the app. Still useful nonetheless.
